Near Burscough a number of farm buildings have had loopholes added where they are near crossings of the Leeds Liverpool Canal. This example at SD416123 has had the loopholes bricked up.

This is a type 22 to the east of Burscough at SD475110

At two crossings of the Leeds Liverpool Canal canalside pubs either had loopholes added to existing buildings or extensions added intended to blend in with the surroundings. This example is the Slipway Inn near Burscough at SD432123

This shows the main wall facing onto the bridge.

This side view shows how existing windows were bricked up and loopholes were added.

The sign is of a more recent vintage, but the welcome extended to uninvited German tourists would have undoubtably been very warm indeed 60 years ago!
