Southern England

The South was the most directly threatened part of England. Kent was less than 30 miles from France and the strongest defences were in this area.

Counties with communications towards London also had strong defences built . A major fortification line was built protecting London and these defences were called the GHQ line.

The more western counties were not targeted directly in the final German invasion plans. The original German Army plan called for an invasion over a wide front including the western counties, however the German Navy called for a more realistic plan involving a smaller landing area excluding this area. The British were unaware of the exact plans and therefore fortified the entire southern coast accordingly.
