After the end of World War II, the Soviet Union turned the Sachsenhausen camp into Special Camp Number 7 for German political prisoners from August 1945 to March 1950. During this period, there were approximately 60,000 Germans imprisoned there, and at least 12,000 of them died of malnutrition and disease, or a higher death rate than that of the Nazi camp, according to some figures
