The Paradeground

Prisoners from 40 nations were sent to Sachsenhausen during the course of its almost 12 years of existence. The camp was finally liberated by a unit of the 47th Army of the Soviet Union on April 22, 1945. On April 20 and 21, the SS had death marched 33,000 prisoners out of the Sachsenhausen camp on Hitler's orders because of the possible danger of starving inmates being released to loot German homes and kill German civilians. When the Russians arrived, there were only 3,000 sick and weak prisoners left at Sachsenhausen, including 1400 women
