Before World War 2 Oranienburger Strasse and the surrounding area was the main Jewish Quarter in Berlin. This photo is of the Neue Synagogue which was inaugurated in the presence of Bismarck in 1866. The building was damaged in Kristallnacht, November 9-10 1938 when the Nazis began their assault on the Jewish community. The building was subsequently gutted by allied bombing during World War 2. It has subsequently been restored.
